Random CD facts

The CD holds 72 minutes worth of music. Why? Because Beethoven's Ninth Symphony was that long. Seems like a reasonable mark to shoot for.

Also, the sampling rate was decided by a surfing contest between a Sony exec and a Philips exec. That's progress.

The president is truly certain that his war in Iraq is a good thing

I don't know. Is this what the world is doomed to? The smartest people live lives full of doubt while the rest of the world's people go through life with absolute certainty in all things. The world isn't black and white, but so many people seem unwilling or unable to view it any other way. It really is bad news for us all if that's the case.

The perfect house

Posted on 2004-04-30 at 08:01

So last night was full of exciting and disappointment. We liked the last house we saw (pictured in yesterday's blog) and we even submitted a bid for it. We gave the guy everything he asked for and still he came back asking for more. No dice. It is the perfect house, but the dude selling it is being a prick. I have no interest in adding another prick into my life for the moment. If he comes back to us ready to deal realistically, then I'll talk, otherwise, it looks like the search is back on. That sucks, though, because I mean it when I say that THIS IS THE PERFECT HOUSE! :(

Intellectual Property is a tool of the modernized, jackbooted thug

Posted on 2004-04-29 at 08:07

Our system of patents, trademarks, and copyrights was never designed for the uses to which our modern world is putting it. Many of us have been saying this for a long time. Thankfully, now it looks like someone important has taken notice:
"As a solution, the council recommended in its report that the patent office and Congress take seven steps to improve the patent system. Those steps include, among other things, hiring new patent examiners, creating a more open system for challenging questionable patents, and rejecting more patents on processes that are deemed to be "obvious" by people in the field." - quoted from Wired's article, New Study Urges Patent Upgrade.

The X-Conference

The X-Conference was great. Lots of crazies, but overall a great conference. Best question of the conference comes from Will: "So, can you have a future past life?" And he asked it with a straight face. How can you beat that?

The Business

Posted on 2004-04-29 at 08:05

The business is going strong. That's why we can afford to up the house price. I spent this week interviewing new candidates. I've picked four potentials and have scheduled follow-up interviews with them for Monday. I also signed Sally up as well. That's two new hires this week. Oh, and Will finally got to try out for a client this week also, so in the next week or so, I'll probably be adding him to the payroll as well. That'll be 3 new people in the field. I am so damn apathetic, I have no idea why people keep giving me more work.

The New House

Posted on 2004-04-29 at 08:04

We've been looking at a few houses. Just last night we saw another one.

We were looking for a home below $400,000.00 (God, that is too much money!) but yesterday after some talking, Denise and I decided to up the limit to $450,000.00. The homes we were looking at were so close to right, we figured that just a little bit more would make all the difference. I suspect it has, given the homes we are now looking at.

The Old House

We've put the old house under contract. The buyer agreed to $100,500.00. Assuming the appraiser agrees, we have sold the house! w00t! Closing is tentatively scheduled for June 20th.

Danville

Posted on 2004-04-29 at 08:02

I spent a week in Danville, VA earlier in the month. Nothing interesting to report. Mostly a lot of clean air, open spaces, and nothing to do. That's a nice vacation, but damn if I could live there.

I've been out of town and busier than I'd like for the last couple of weeks which is why there is such a large gap in the blog. I'll try to cover the last couple weeks events below.

My House

Meeting the real estate agent today to go over some paperwork. Looks like the condo is going on the market for $98,800.00 as of Saturday. W00t! Since we only owe about $42,000.00, that means we'll see about $56,800.00 in profit (less agent fees and such). That would be very nice!

My blog

I like the hands-on, simple text-edness of my blog (just open the page and edit it by hand to add an entry), but I really wish I had an RSS feed for it. That'd be cool. Not that it really matters, since noone reads this thing. :-)

Quiet time

Posted on 2004-04-07 at 08:02

I haven't been posting much lately due to the fact that I'm selling my house, buying a new new, adopting a kid, and still have a spanking new home business to run. Too much stuff, not enough time.

An open vulnerability database?

Posted on 2004-04-07 at 08:01

Seems like the Open Source Vulnerability Database could fill a niche need here by allowing people to report vulnerabilities, but not automatically posting them until a set time after the report date. Then having it automatically notify the vendor of the vulnerability. The vendor could ignore it (in which case after a set interval the issue would go public) or fix it and let it go public sooner. Just an idea.

The house

Denise and I have been cleaning the house to prepare it for sale next week. We got one of those PODS, and we filled it with our excess stuff. We tossed a bunch and stored a bunch and now our house is mostly empty. I kinda like it! :-)
