The Next Campaign

Posted on 2005-02-26 at 08:03

Bryan's campaign is ending in a session or two and Will and I have agreed to co-DM the next one. That is good, because it keeps the workload from falling on just one person. We have some good ideas and I'm looking forword to seeing them brought to fruition.

Carpets and such

Been slow for the last three weeks, but the slow season is about to come to an end, so hopefully we'll see some pick up of the work.

Doom, Gloom, and Voom

Reports of Voom's death were greatly exaggerated. Apparently Charles Dolan, the President of Cablevision has petitioned his company to seel him the Voom assets so he can keep it going.

Gator (now Claria) executive, D. Reed Freeman, has been appointed---are you sitting down?---to the Data Privacy and Integrity Advisory Committee of the Department of Homeland Security. Well, what do you expect from an agency that hired its own Chief Privacy Officer from Doubleclick? Seriously. Yes, seriously. I feel safer already.

Getting fat

Posted on 2005-02-17 at 08:02

Personal health is something I've struggled with for a few years now---since I discovered my horrid Cholesterol numbers. To that end, I have spent no small amount of time looking for ways to make myself healthier and more fit. I found this article on Carbohydrates interesting. I already knew that foods with a High Glysemic Index were not good for my cholesterol, but what was interesting was the distinction between complex carbohydrates and simple carbohydrates as it relates to weight gain. I should make Bryan aware of this as well. He's fat and I want him dead, but it will be unltimately unsatisfying if he dies from a heart attack instead of my vile machinations. I can't let my years of martial arts training go to waste by not killing him with my bare hands.

Writing for a living

Posted on 2005-02-17 at 08:01

I need to get this "writing career" thing going. I'm so tired of Corporate America (as anyone reading my blog knows) and I think I'd enjoy a stint as a writer of some sort.

Flying on someone else's airline ticket

Posted on 2005-02-15 at 08:02

Still on the topic of security, There are three things to authenticate: the identity of the traveler, the boarding pass, and the computer record. Think of them as three points on the triangle. Under the current system, the boarding pass is compared to the traveler's identity document, and then the boarding pass is compared with the computer record. But because the identity document is never compared with the computer record -- the third leg of the triangle -- it's possible to create two different boarding passes and have no one notice. Credit to Bruce Schneier for the original discovery. I'm putting it here to further accentuate the point made above with the street picture...and to stick it to The Man, who should NOT be requiring us to show our papers when we fly domestically in the first place. Nazis!

Coolness of her new system

Posted on 2005-02-09 at 08:02

Part of the problem Windows had, and part of what makes her computer screaming fast, is the fact that is a 64 bit Athlon with a SATA drive. So cool. So fast. I've got 64 bit Windows XP on one partition and 64 bit Fedora Linux on the other. Man, that box is so fast. I am jealous. Maybe I can wait til the dual core chips are out later this year. Then I can get a dual core 64 bit chip! That would make me happy.

Dual booting

Posted on 2005-02-09 at 08:01

I got Denise's new system dual booting finally. She needed a Windows partition for gaming and some financial software. Of course, it would have taken an hour or so if Windows had been as easy to install as Linux. Instead, I had all sorts of trouble with the Windows install. Took a couple of weeks to get all the drivers and directions to get it to install on this box (no, I'm not making this up, ask if you want details!). Linux, however, was a matter of putting the disk in and clicking enter a few times. 2 weeks versus 20 minutes. Hmmm. Is linux ready for the desktop? Well, if Windows is the high water mark for desktop usage, then it's beyond ready.

RSS, CSS, and XSL

Posted on 2005-02-04 at 08:01

I'm in the process of making changes to this blog that will allow you to subscribe to it as a feed. I considered doing it all dynamically, but then thought that it would be an interesting challenge to impoement it witout resorting to dynamic content. Instead, the base page will be written in XML (specifically the Atom namespace brand of XML) and I will use XSL and CSS to transform it back into the html you are used to seeing. The results should be kinda cool. I've got it almost complete and will unveil it soon. Of course, if I did it right, the grand unveiling will be a bit lame, since it should all look identical to how it does now...but with the ability to subscribe to the blog feed.

The lansdscape designer, Kathleen, met with us to show us the draft plan for our yard. It is precisely what I'd wanted. I couldn't be happier with the draft.
