Voom's Finale
Posted on Apr 13, 2005 at 08:01:00 AM
I guess there is no room in the marketplace for a third satellite broadcast company; even one with higher quality and lower prices than the other two. Voom has announced that as of the 30th of this month they will cease braodcasting. The end of the first HD Age is upon us. This is truly damaging to the market. It solidifies the duopoly of DirectTV and Dish Network and it proves that there is no room for the little guy in the U.S. satellite TV market. In lieu of Voom satellite service, I'll probably just use OTA free HDTV. Every local station braodcasts in digital HD, so why not try that out for a while?
Doom, Gloom, and Voom

Reports of Voom's death were greatly exaggerated. Apparently Charles Dolan, the President of Cablevision has petitioned his company to seel him the Voom assets so he can keep it going.
Alas, poor Voom. I knew him, Horatio.

Yep, it's official. Voom has sold off their satellite and will discontinue service soon. It's a sad day. Voom was the best (despite the installation troubles) and I seriously doubt I'll be as happy with another provider. Echostar, of Dish Network fame, has purchased the Voom satellite. I'll keep an eye on them to see what they plan on doing with it. It'd be nice if they continued service for the Voom subscribers, but somehow I doubt it will be so simple a solution.

The Voom installer is done and he did a great job. If you need a Voom installation done in this area, ask for his company, LT Designs.

Voom actually has an installer on my roof right now doing what they promised me. Holy Crap! And he seems like a good guy, too. He runs his own company (LT Designs) and subcontracts installations from Installs, Inc, which in turn subcontracts from Voom. The real test will be after he's gone, but so far so good.
Voom Again

Glad I didn't hold my breath. Voom cancelled on me. Very. Upset. 'Nuff said.

Waiting for Voom to show up again. They had to order a special upgraded antenna for my house for the terrestrial signals. Apparently they got it and the guy is supposed to come out today to install it. For some reason, I'm skeptical. :-|
Closer Still

The screen has been hung and the floor has been carpeted in the Caudroplex. Soon enough, there will be a 9 foot screening of The Lord of the Rings!!!
Caudroplex update

Work is underway. All the equipment is in place (excepting the screen and projector) and I should be able to watch a movie on this beast within the next couple of weeks. Oh, I so can't wait!
The Wrath of Voom

OK. Voom guy has come and left. Problem still exists. Can't totally blame him, though. The roof is steep and wet. I wouldn't go up there today. The tropical storm just ended late last night. He says he'lll call back to reschedule. Let's hope he does.
The Return of the Son of Voom

So, in theory, today sometime the Voom install guy should show up to fix things up. We shall see. I don't wanna have to call back and bitch again. That would suck.
My Planetarium

I can't do it in Round One, but for Round Two, I'm thinking a nice telescope in a glass dome on the roof, running to a computer in the Caudroplex and from there to the big screen. Sweet! Must. Have. Home. Planetarium.

Voom is a good company but satellite installers suck ass. The first guy butchered the job (badly!) and now I've been playing whododat with the subcontractor to get it all resolved. Hopefully tonights visit will fix the lack of local channels.
Waiting

Sitting here waiting for the HT installer guy and the Voom installer guy to show up. Waiting for other people is never as fun as making em wait for you.

The TV

I dropped Bryan's shit-ass company and have moved to a company with great customer service. It's satellite, so there are issues with storms and stuff, but overall I'm happy so far. We'll see how it all turns out.
