The Malaise Of Modernity

"It’s not just that people sacrifice their love relationships, and the care of their children, to pursue their careers. Something like this has perhaps always existed. The point is that today many people feel called to do this, feel they ought to do this, feel their lives would be somehow wasted or unfulfilled if they didn’t do it."

Life is perforated with meaning

This detail from an Incredible Hulk comic from the 70’s is a reminder for me.

It reminds me that the universe is perforated with meaning. Between each dot, the universe has a story and each one is a billion years old.

It reminds me that every idea, every moment, and every image is composed of a million smaller ones that culminates in now.

I remember that if I let myself, I can slip between the dots, slide through reality, and make any story my own.

I remember that the empty spaces carry as much meaning as the dots and that the world is better for all the small things.

Comics are a part of my life in so many ways. They have colored how I view the world and how I live in it. Like the old 4 color process that created the dotted scenery of older comics, that worldview may be flawed but it has character and a depth that can’t be reproduce easily.

What We Did To The Japanese

California, 1942: Japanese-American Mamoru “Morrie” Kuramoto is discharged from the Army, and, according to the later recollections of his daughter, “given the choice of being interned or going to the East coast.” He heads for New York, joins the Art Students League, and eventually begins work at Timely Comics. He continues with Timely until 1957, and then returns in the late 1960s, by which time it’s called Marvel Comics. He remains there until his death in 1985.

Also in California, 1942: These Japanese-American boys are photographed reading comic books in the Tule Lake Relocation Center. The one on the left is reading MARVEL MYSTERY COMICS #34, which contains the stories “Exposed! The Jap Invaders” and “Dr. Watson Makes Monkeys Out of the Japs.”

A human torch?

This page was published days, if not hours, before Nazi Germany invaded Poland and World War II was set into motion.

It couldn’t be more unassuming, could it? A fairly primitive drawing of three middle-aged men, sitting at a boardroom, cigarette smoke hovering above ashtrays. They’re slightly curious, leaning in to hear a story, but there’s hardly a sense of mystery. They didn’t even close the curtains all the way.

And thus the Marvel Universe quietly begins…this is the first panel in the first story of Marvel Comics #1, 1939.

Professor Horton’s “difficult problem,” of course, is that the “synthetic man” he’s created bursts into flame upon contact with oxygen. His figure becomes a wall of fire, becomes something like…a human torch.

Successful cookouts and amicable hostage exchanges

A bunch of my friends came over for a cookout today. Shep was in town and showed up. Brent came with his family. Bryan (He Who Shall Die By My Hand) came over. Will showed...well actually Rebecca showed in his place. Much fun was had. There was chicken, derisive joking, beef, fire, corn, and vitriol. All was good in the land of Caudron.

As a side-note, I exchanged one item for one item with Bryan. He received his Mystic China book back in exchange for a Conan: Tower of the Elephant graphic novel. The exchange took place in a semi-lit hallway with nervous glances and distrustful scowls.

You, too, should read the new Conan: Tower of the Elephant:

Buffy Season 8

So, BtVS has been off the air for a couple of years, but Joss Whedon (series mastermind) has brought it back for an "8th season" via the medium of comic books. I have issue #1. It's a great book---solid art, and wonderful writing---but it is a very different medium. The difference in medium is evident in the story and the "feel" of the work itself as distinct from the tv series it follows.

So it you are a fan, go yourself a favor is get a copy (if you can find one!). You will be pleased, but don't expect the same audience experience you had watching the show. It goes without saying that it may be as good, but it's quite changed.

Buffy Season 8

Joss Whedon, head writer and creative force behind the Buffy franchise, has annouced a deal with Dark Horse Comics to write a new comic series that takes place after the fade-to-black of the end of Season 7 of the Buffy series.

While not as good as a new tv show picking up where the old left off, this is still good news for those of us still entranced by the series. I believe I'll be subscribing asap.

In honor of the event, I've taken the Buffy Personality Test (to see which character I am most like). I did this because I have no life and dogged fanboyism is the way of my people. If you wish my tribe to accept you as one of us, you must go there now to take the test as I did. My results follow:

Glorificus
54% amorality, 72% passion, 90% spirituality, 45% selflessness
You probably have a complicated, multi-faceted personality. Kind of like Glory-Ben-Glorificus.

Passionate and driven with a spiritual side that comes out at times, a healthy taste for the finer things in life and a willingness to do what's necessary to achieve your ends. You're assertive and have no problems standing up for yourself. And, push come to shove, you're the closest anyone's ever come to straight-up beating the Slayer and her gang.

The upside of that result? Well, Glorificus was a god. Powerful. Capricious. The downside? Gorificus was raw evil. The sort of evil that steals wheelchairs and slaps the homeless. Glorificus is a survivor, but not in a good way.

I could swear I've taken that test in the past and gotten Xander as a result (which is much nicer, if a bit less interesting!).

Captain America versus the Patriot Act and President Bush

Captain America says that our President is an asshole. From the article:

Captain America is about to battle his most fearsome foe yet: The government of the United States.

Today, Marvel Comics is releasing the first in its miniseries Civil War, which can only be described as a gutsy comic-book series focusing on the whole debate over homeland security and tighter government controls in the name of public safety.

The seven-issue series once again puts superheroes right back in the thick of real-world news, just as DC Comics has Batman battling al-Qaeda in a soon-to-appear comic and Marvel's X-Men continue to explore themes of public intolerance and discrimination.

It also recalls the plotline during the Watergate years when Captain America's alterego, disillusioned by White House politics, stopped donning the patriotic costume.

But with Civil War, hero is pitted against hero in the choice of whether or not to side with the government, as issues ranging from a Guantanamo-like prison camp for superheroes, embedded reporters and the power of media all play in the mix.

A bit of a long quote, but the story is just too interesting to me.

What would Jesus do if he returned to Earth and discovered he was wildly out of touch with modern trends? Don a Spandex costume and fight sin on the streets of New York City, of course! But as always, he faces several obstacles: a disapproving Father; the Antichrist, in the guise of the New York City Parks Commissioner; and the temptations of a beautiful seamstress.

I've been finishing up the organization of my comics (want to get done before I leave) and I came across some old Green Lanterns that I hadn't read in a while. That was a good series.

Someone asked me why I bothered getting a degree in Religion and Literature if I'm gonna spend all my time making jokes about body functions and reading comic books. If a lifetime of reading the Amazing Spider Man has taught me anything, it's that high and low culture are false distinctions. Friedrich Nietzsche? Asshat.
