Jr High Drop Out

Remembering Simpler Times

I am tired of living through important historical moments. I long for a life that's simpler, when all I cared about was learning how to spell boobies on a calculator or finding the best stick to play with on my walk home from reading Dragon Magazine at the public library.

The saddest sight is always the bottom of a coffee cup. But the cup is it's most useful when it's empty.

My personal hell

Leaving the house half-dressed in the middle of the night to get myself medicine because I feel like a bag of ass while on a technical support call with a guy in another country who I can barely understand who has me on hold for 12 minutes while he looks things up that I already know the answer to. This is why people go apeshit and start harming themselves and others. Thankfully, I'm too lazy to harm anyone. Instead, I'll just quietly seeth and wish a short (maybe medium) list of people great harm in my head.

Paperclips in the 80’s

Every time I see a paperclip, I just think “lock pick”. Between that and the fact that I expected much more quicksand in my life as an adult, I'm pretty sure 80’s TV broke me inside.

Life is perforated with meaning

This detail from an Incredible Hulk comic from the 70’s is a reminder for me.

It reminds me that the universe is perforated with meaning. Between each dot, the universe has a story and each one is a billion years old.

It reminds me that every idea, every moment, and every image is composed of a million smaller ones that culminates in now.

I remember that if I let myself, I can slip between the dots, slide through reality, and make any story my own.

I remember that the empty spaces carry as much meaning as the dots and that the world is better for all the small things.

Comics are a part of my life in so many ways. They have colored how I view the world and how I live in it. Like the old 4 color process that created the dotted scenery of older comics, that worldview may be flawed but it has character and a depth that can’t be reproduce easily.

The Perspective of Scale

It's simply amazing …We recommend watching this video at FULL SCREEN (1080p), with audio on.The night sky of Namibia is one of the best in the world, about the same quality of the deserts of Chile and Australia. This 13 min video contains about 250 hours of actual exposures, gathered at Tivoli Farm, Namibia, during 10 perfectly cloudless nights.

Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra's Don Quixote, published in 1604

Just then they came in sight of thirty or forty windmills that rise from that plain. And no sooner did Don Quixote see them that he said to his squire, "Fortune is guiding our affairs better than we ourselves could have wished. Do you see over yonder, friend Sancho, thirty or forty hulking giants? I intend to do battle with them and slay them. With their spoils we shall begin to be rich for this is a righteous war and the removal of so foul a brood from off the face of the earth is a service God will bless."

Sometimes I worry that I identify too greatly with the Ingenious Knight of La Mancha. It's not that I think the world doesn't need people willing to tilt at giants, real and imagined, but rather that things didn't end well for the Don.

In the end, Quixote is left disillusioned with humanity---his fleeting bliss fading in favor of a solemn sanity while he turns his back on the very civility that once gave his life meaning. He dies melancholy, hopeless, and broken.

I'm not down with that part.

About me

Someone asked me why I bothered getting a degree in Religion and Literature if I'm gonna spend all my time making jokes about body functions and reading comic books. If a lifetime of reading the Amazing Spider Man has taught me anything, it's that high and low culture are false distinctions. Friedrich Nietzsche? Asshat.
