Jr High Drop Out

Productivity, Dry Erase Markers, and the Art of Abduction

To those naysayers who claim I am lazy and lame and cannot possibly perform any task of consequence whilst at work, I say to you, "Gaze upon a snapshot of my whiteboard and be humbled":

Clearly, this proves that I am both productive AND well respected in my field of employ!

UFO Spotted by multiple personnel over O'Hare International Airport

According to the Chicago Tribune, several United Airlines personnel witnessed an unidentified flying object shaped like a saucer hovering low over the airport.

You are already snickering, I'm sure, as did United and the FAA (at least publicly) until the newspaper brought forth multiple witnesses and filed a Freedom of Information Act request for release of records. Suddenly, the FAA and United---both of whom claimed there was no such report or incident---mysteriously found the reports, but explained them as a "weather phenomena".

I see. :-|

So...the people who work with planes on the runway for a living mistook glare from runway lights interacting with the clouds for a saucer shaped flying object that hovered low over the ground, then took off through the cloud cover so fast it left a hole...and not just a little "what was that?" mistake, but a big "it was no earthly craft and I am visibly shaken!" kinda mistake.

Yeah. And Kennedy was shot by a lone gunman too.

Well, I'm sure it'll get forgotten soon enough. Hey it's happened at least two times in very recent history (in the last 5 years), got tons of media attention, then a few dismissive reports later people just forgot. I guess the threat of an unknown craft mucking about in restricted U.S. airspace isn't so terribly important.

Virginia's UFO History

Our local paper, the Virginian Pilot, ran with a Sunday Headline of "UFOs: Seeing is Believing?"

Let me start by saying that I'm happily surprised that they gave it as much coverage as they did.

Now let me point out that much of the article just rehashes the same inaccuracies that have been spit out of the media machine for years regarding things like Project Blue Book (saying that most of the cases have been explained by Project Blue Book avoids the point that many have not!) and "odd winged military aircraft". That last one bugged me. The writer quotes an Air Force spokesman who says effectively, "No, we were not flying anything that could have explained that sighting" then states with a wink and a nudge that we all know the military is flying super-secret "odd winged" aircraft around here! Really? Because I've never seen any of that! Indeed, the many Air Force, NASA, and Governmental employees (including at least two former presidents) would likely know the difference and they have most certainly not chalked it all up to odd-winged military aircraft.

The article wasn't all bad, but it was far from good for ufology. Too many jabs and jokes for my taste.

NASA digs me

Well, to be fair, I don't know whether they dig me or just like laughing at me. All I know is that I've had 115 visits to this blog from NASA this month alone. I just thought others would find that interesting. I did. Maybe they are reading my UFO blogs.

Claim that an alien is melon-balling you in your sleep---you go to the sanitarium. Claim that you've seen the face of Mother Mary in a misshapen bagel---get on Oprah.

Jennings UFO report

It seemed odd to me that Peter Jennings would do a report on UFOs a few months ago, especially one that was serious and reasonable. This is typically the deathknell for a reporter's career. Now I know why he was willing to do it. He had nothing to lose. :(

Project Blue Book Archive

The Project Blue Book Archive is something I may have linked to before but, in case I've not yet mentioned it, I will now. It's a project that Will is heading that posts the declassified Project Blue Book documents to a searchable web site. Highly recommended if you have any interest in reading what the government has to say about UFOs.

The Blue Book Archive

Will has made some impressive strides on the Blue Book Archive recently. If you haven't checked it out yet, you should. Also, sponsor a roll of microfilm. It's cheap ($70 or so) and shows tangible short term gains (a roll is added to the archive!). This is an important project and it needs to be supported. When more of my money is freed up (see Venture Capitalism above), I have every intent to sponsor a few rolls of film.

What is Project blue book? Well, from their own About page:

"The goal of the Project Blue Book Archive is to provide open access to high-resolution document scans relating to the US government's investigation of the UFO phenomenon through an easy-to-use searchable interface. These documents are drawn from official sources such as the National Archive's Project Blue Book microfilm collection and various other document collections that have been declassified and released under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). This web-site and its content are provided as a free service to those researching the history of the US government's official interest in this topic."

Mexican UFO video

I finally got a chance to watch the video made by the Mexican Air Force of the Unidentified Flying Objects. Intriguing. Even CNN gave it some airplay. That's pretty significant!

Project Blue Book

Will had a good idea. He wants to scan in the text from Project Blue Book and make it a searchable web archive. It'll give our show a bit more street cred and it'll be of use to a lot of people, I think. Interesting idea. Costly, but interesting.

The X-Conference

The X-Conference was great. Lots of crazies, but overall a great conference. Best question of the conference comes from Will: "So, can you have a future past life?" And he asked it with a straight face. How can you beat that?

X-Conference

It's getting closer! Will and I were just chatting about that and the soon-to-be annouced Martian lander discovery. It'd be nice if there were life on Mars. It'd make it easier for me when I tell people I believe in UFOs. (update: The shocking announcement from NASA was that there was once water on Mars. Whoopty Doo. Everyone already knew that! Why the big hush hush and cermony? Lameless!)
