So, Tom, Why do you suck so bad?

Posted on 2007-12-19 at 20:50

Answer: I'm lame (and work has me buried right now).

That said, I have big plans to fix my current lag and make future lags even less likely. Over the Christmas holiday, I hope to rewrite the site software from the ground up. I have some feature ideas and some other ideas that should make the site a better one when I'm done.

So, in short, bear with me as I make some huge under the hood changes and some commensurate front end changes that readers will enjoy.

Best part? My most frequent readers will get a great deal of input as to what features I add or remove. More details about the new site will come soon enough. Until then, discuss amongst yourselves the ins and outs of the career of Ivan Koloff, The Russian Bear of Wrestling. Prepare to office hypotheses with concrete examples. And Begin....

The top banner image has changed again

Posted on 2007-08-04 at 14:45

I've changed the top banner image again. The latest banner is a picture of the skyline across the bay in Guangdong. Not all of China is Great Walls, ancient temples, and misty bamboo forests. Guangdong is a vibrant city with an active night life. We stayed on Shamain Island. It was a wonderful place.

Last time I changed the banner, someone asked me what banners I'd prepped for the site. If you want to see the images I use for the banner on my site, you can see them below. Each was taken by me or my wife in China. Click the image to see a full sized version:

Blogging statistics

Posted on 2007-08-03 at 23:32

Why am I posting this? I dunno:

I've been blogging for 3.51 years.

I've blogged 909 times in that period.

That comes to 1 blog every 1.41 days.

Which is also .71 blogs per day.

I am pathetic, but I entertain me, and in the beginning that's all I really set out to do. Mission accomplished.

Welcome Back, Cotter

Posted on 2007-05-28 at 20:13

Being as you are surely hanging on my every blog entry, you will have ntocied with a sense of dread and doom that this website was down for a portion of the holiday weekend. It suffices to say that I screwed up my DNS stuff in the IP Address switchover that I mentioned in an earlier entry. Only this domain was affected---the only domain I control for which I am not the DNS of record. But, all is better now.

My global media empire is nigh complete!

I have set up a storefront, in which you may purchase various mental droppings as sewn/heat-printed onto bad fashionware. Up first: The Lonely Fornication Truckers Hat. More to come.

To answer your next question, no, I don't actually expect people to buy anything. I just find this sort of thing fun. Mostly, it's just funny to me that the phrase "Lonely Fornication" popped into my head and now the world can purchase it on a retro-cool trucker's cap. Due in no small part to my overwhelming desire to waste my own time and my gigantenormous ego, you can expect to be glossing over future schock hocking as new random phrases and tidbits spur me to make future lame graphics.

Understanding the Audience

Posted on 2007-05-19 at 08:21

So, a recent online poll on my blog showed that 70% of you found yourselfs allied with Milton Friedman, both socially and economically. In an effort to better understand the audience, I did some quick research and asked a few questions. Turns out, his work "Free to Choose: A Personal Statement" was among his most respected works and well represented his views late in his life. So I bought it. To balance the order out, I also bought "The Communist Manifesto" and to make the myself appear falsely academic, I added a book on the philosophy of language called "Naming and Necessity". My proof follows:

If anyong out there wants a copy of these books, you can get them here:

Next up? Select works from Mikhail Bakunin to better understand a social/economic theorist closer to my current position. It'll be interesting to read the arguments for the claims I've been making.

Scheduled Outage

Posted on 2007-05-16 at 07:36

My IP address changes overnight tonight, so I expect that I will have a small outage period starting somewhere between midnight this evening and 6 am tomorrow and ending as soon as the DNS record updates and I can update all my internal systems. Updating my stuff will take no more than half an hour, I'd guess (if that), but I am at the mercy of the PTB for my updated DNS getting propagated.

In case I should be down longer than expected, enjoy this brief overview of Milton Friedman. Given the results of the majority of you guys fell in the lower right quandrant of the political compass test, you should read about the only other famous thinker that was mentioned as being in that quadrant. You might find yourself agreeing with him. If you are among the 30% that fell in the lower left quadrant, enjoy instead this article about the Mikhail Bakunin. Bakunin was essentially the Anarchist Collectivist's answer to Marx' brand of Authoritarian Communism. For bonus points, consider what economic theories Bakunin and Friedman might agree upon. Prepare to discuss. There may be a quiz.

Scattershot patterns

Posted on 2007-05-11 at 08:10

It appears that the majority of the people who read my blog fall into the lower right quadrant of this chart:

The rest all fall within the lower left quandrant. That, to me is interesting for a number of reasons:

  1. No one (as not a single person) fell on the top half (the authoritarian side) of the chart. Socially, my readers are clearly Libertarian. The closest result to authoritarian was a -0.72. The farthest result from authoritarian was my own (-6.26) with most falling between -3.00 and -5.00.
  2. Approximately 70% of the people reading my blog fell on the right side of the chart. Economically, my readers are mostly, but not entirely, neo-liberalists or libertarians rather than communists or collectivists. The farthest right was 4.35. The farthest left was -7.63. The greatest grouping was found between 2.00 and -1.00.
  3. One of my oldest atheist friends and one of my fiends with whom I attend Sunday school scored to within a couple of tenths of a point identically on both axis. Not sure that means anything, but I found it interesting anyway.
  4. One guy treated the chart like a bullseye and scored damn near the perfect center with a Economic 0.75/ Social-0.72 result. He must be that mythic political "center" I've heard so much about.

That is all for now. Thanks for sending me results. They were interesting.

A few people have asked me how many people read this blog. The answer is that I have no clue how many read it regularly. While I could, I suppose, track that sort of thing, I don't. I can tell you how much traffic I get per day or month, but not how many of them are repeat visitors or how many visit via the news feed. Anyway, since it's been asked, here are the highly summarized visitor stats for the last year broken down by month.

10 Weird Things About Me

Posted on 2007-03-07 at 08:22

Some of you know me (1 or 2 of the 3 people who read this blog?). Some don't (at least according to the mail I get). To that end, let me introduce myself.

I'm Tom Caudron. I'm weird. Everyone is weird in some way, so in that respect I think I'm perfectly normal. It's the ways in which a person is weird that makes them unique and (sometimes but rarely) interesting. Here are ten things about me that you may or may not know already that make me weird, unique, but probably not interesting.

  1. I can't store my shoes on the floor. If I find they have been sitting about on the floor unattended, I have a ritual that makes them OK again.
  2. I used to be a Sous Chef. I quite nearly made the cooking arts my life, then I got smart.
  3. I first made a hash oil block at the age of 12. I knew how before that, but never really had a reason til then. If you are law enforcement, then this was a lie designed to impress my druggy readers.
  4. I read upwards of 30 blogs a day. Obsessively. If I miss an entry, I just...oh who am I kidding? I NEVER miss an entry. I just criticize some as boring.
  5. I've published poetry.
  6. My degree is in Religious Studies and Literature (dual major) and my profession is Software Developer.
  7. I used to teach Aikijutsu.
  8. When I lock doors at night, I have a compulsion that requires that I check it...three times...then one more time in case the third check unlocked it. When I'm done, I worry that it's still unlocked. I also have a compulsion about shutting and locking doors behind me whenever I walk into a room. This has concerned many people who have wondered why I locked us in a room together.
  9. People can't touch my food or plate. It's not a germ thing. It's a possessive thing. It's my food. You can't touch it. If you do, then it's now your food. Congrats on being a touchy jerk. This is my hang up, I know, therefore I try not to say anything to people when they've destroyed my meal. It's usually not intentional and they should have to feel guilt over my insanity.
  10. I like all kung fu flicks. I beleive that any film could be improved with the addition of a solid kung fu fight. Schindler's List was good, but if he'd ended it with a kung fu fight with the Nazi's, all the better. Gone With The Wind was good, but when Rhett slapped Scarlet, it would've been even better had she blocked and countered with a Shadowless Kick.

What? I said I was weird! What's your weird? If you have a blog post it there. If you want to post it here, feel free to send it along and I'll add it as an entry. No takers? Cowards!

I am a tool

Posted on 2007-02-09 at 21:53

So, I think I have something broken deep inside me in that I'm quite excited that I've written a shell script that adds new entries to my blog and calls up the text editor for me to modify them after creation. Plus, the script now makes each entry second-specific.

"Second-specific?" you ask. Yes. You see before, when I added a new entry I named it something like "2007_02_09_21_53_00.html" which basically says the entry was created on Feb 9th, 2007 at 9:53pm and "00" seconds. But NOW it will say something like "2007_02_09_21_53_12.html" which tells me that it was created 12 seconds into the 53rd minute! You see, when I named it before, I was really only typing it and just didn't care about the seconds, but with my new shell scripty goodness, I can have second-specificity without even trying. As Paris would say, "That's so hawt".

See, I'm broken inside. :-(

Those of you who read regularly (both of you?) will note that this site was down yesterday. Why, you ask? DNS issues. It suffices to say that hosting my own DNS is far superior to trusting others. All the domains which I manage on my own DNS server were fine, but the digitalelite.com domains were all interrupted by a server move at the DNS service host (1and1.com). No biggie, but there you go. National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Posted on 2006-10-02 at 09:32

For those reading this blog by way of the feed, you will have not noticed that the site is now a (not so) pretty pink color. This entry (which will show up on the feed) is for you.

This is National Breast Cancer Awareness month. I know some of you will point out that there exists no National Prostate Cancer Awareness month, but you should be thankful. I mean, what color would my site be then? Either way, whether it's the breast cancer research, prostate cancer research, or the research of your choice, you should consider giving a small donation. It's tax deductable and you can give as little as $20.00. For the price of a dinner out with the spouse (or a lunch out by yourself if Work Brian is picking the location!) you can make a difference. The National Cancer Society takes donations for many types of cancer research (and you can specify which type you want to support). Seriously. Do it. It'll take a couple of minutes. Cancer is not a nice end to a full life. It's a messy and often abrupt end to a life that wasn't done. This is something we, as a species, need to eradicate. Let's give it a shot. In a decade when the cure rolls out, you can say you helped.

The shameless guilting is complete. We now return you to our regularly scheduled blog. Other than the pink motif and the top blurb, I don't intend to mention this again.

Breaking the rules

Posted on 2006-09-20 at 08:29

My one main rule here is that I don't revise content after posting---excepting particularly bad spelling errors.

I am breaking that rule with my post on early Methodist history. That post is really designed for my Sunday School class, and I want to make sure it is readable and clear, so I've revised it for content flow today. I may revise it again as needed. Just being clear about that since I've made such a big deal in the past of not revising posts here.

Peace out, dawgs.

I find it mildly humorous that I'm so accustomed to switching gears in that way that I didn't even notice how odd that might appear to a stranger. Well, in any case, both posts are a reflection of me, so odd or not, you can expect more of the same jumbled ethical mess going forward.

Also, James, you have now been referred to by name in my blog. I'm still not sure why you wanted that, but it is done so you can quit yer bitching. :-)

Now that it's released and the final version of the spec out there for use, I've been menaing to make the changes needed to have a valid ATOM feed. I made some headway this morning. I still need to address about 4 more issues, but that's a big improvement over yesterday's 20 or so issues.

Miscellany

Posted on 2006-03-13 at 20:23

This blog entry will have no cohesion or structure.

This site has ads and stuff. You already know that. Do I make money like that? Not really. Mostly because I'm not really trying. I'm sure I could if I changed things a bit. I'm made some pocket change. If you have a moral objection to the ads, try something like Firefox's AdBlock extension or some other plug in to remove them from the page...or don't. I'll do my best to care, but I don't expect to succeed. :)

Work is "teh suX0r". Not becuase the project is bad (it's kinda fun) or the people suck (all people suck, the guys I work directly with suck much less than most). It's just that it's work and work blows fat chunks. I just want the stuff I do on this project to be decoupled from the income it generates. That would be ideal. If you don't get what I mean, then let me put it differently: Work sucks because work is an obligation to others...usually "demanding others".

'Nuff said.

OK, so I'm making some changes to the look and feel of the site. The structure is essentialy the same, but the look is totally different.

In particular, I've dropped the use of tables for layout in favor of using CSS positioned elements. this makes it easier to make wholesale changes to the layout later without having to redo the table structure every time. Tables for layout is sooo 1990's. CSS is the way forward. Of course, for now, there a ton of ugly hacks I had to employ so that this site looks right in browsers that don't properly implement CSS (really this is just Internet Explorer at this point!).

Lessons my blog taught me about my writing

Posted on 2006-01-18 at 13:07

Unless you are writing concrete poetry (poetry whose visual layout is part of the art of the work itself) the words should be layout-neutral. Seems obvious, I know, but it's a lesson made clear to me in my recent reorganization of this blog. I have entries that reference the entries above and below them. I have entries that are not discreet (that is they rely on another entry being next to them). These entries are among my weakest in content now that they can be read on their own and even when grouped with other entries, they draw the readers attention from the words to the form when they reference an entry that should be directly above them but no longer are.

Content is king. Those entries of mine that offer new opinions or information are my most popular. By. A. Very. Large. Margin. Regulars occasionally appreciate the entries in which I link to interesting things elsewhere, but most readers, including regulars (yes, both of you!) prefer original content. It is my college papers, my how-to guides, and my religious commentary that get the most attention from visitors. OK. I get the hint. I'm not gonna stop linking to cool things I find, but I'll try to put more original content online.

I don't have a voice. It takes a while for a writer's voice to coalese, and from my writings on here, it appears mine has not yet done so. What is a writer's voice? A writer's voice is that distinctive tone and language that let's a reader identify a writer by the words alone. Poe has a clear voice. Read some Poe, and I garuantee that you will be able to pick out his work from a crowd without benefit of byline. I seem to change voice depending on topic and mood. I'll need to spend some time pondering that.

Less is more. By nature, I ramble. I'm learning to rein that in a bit. Brevity is not my strong suit, but my most recent posts show that I'm learning to be more dense in my writing. I consider this a good thing.

AWStats in Ubuntu

Posted on 2006-01-16 at 11:28

I've been using Webalizer for purusing my logs to see what visitors frequest my site. Webalizer is a good free software application for getting a quick overview of site trends, but I wanted more detail than it offered.

I consulted the Great LazyWeb (via his esteemed oracle Google) and was given a vision that I should install awstats.

To install awstats in Ubuntu all i had to do was "sudo apt-get install awstats". Afterwards, I modified the /etc/awstats/awstats.conf file to point to my apache logs for the log location and to a directory I created called awstats for the working directory (ie, where it puts everything). Specifically, the following bits from the conf file are the bits I changed:

LogFile="/var/log/apache2/tomde.access.log.1"
LogType=W
LogFormat=1
SiteDomain="tom.digitalelite.com"
DNSLookup=1
DirData="/var/www/awstats"

There were two small gotchas for the uninitiated. First, when I tried to run it with the command "perl awstats.pl -config=tom.digitalelite.com -update" it told me it couldn't find the file awstats.pl. Well, a short find command later and I discovered that Ubuntu put it in the /usr/lib/cgi-bin/ directory. So I changed my command to "perl /usr/lib/cgi-bin/awstats.pl -config=tom.digitalelite.com -update" which worked like a charm. The app ran and did...nothing that I could see. Thus the second small gotcha. Apparently all that command does it compile the log data into a database format for it to use later for report generation. So I found the commands to run for each report (again, the Great LazyWeb provided me the guidance I sought, Oh Great LazyWeb, Thou art grand indeed.). It suggested that I could run some particular script that would run all the reports at once, but I could not find it, so I took all the commands for each report, copied them into a single shell script and ran that. The shell script looks like this:

Also stay tuned on more useful updates to the blog infrastructure. I am going to look into a way to automatically collate blog entries by keyword. Then a person could theoretically just bookmark the keyword pages that they find interesting and only read that. An example of practical use? Let's say you can't stand wading through all my Linux entries and just want to read my entries on Writing or Religion. Well then, assuming I do this, I envision that you would be able to just bookmark http://tom.digitalelite.com/keywords/religion.html or http://tom.digitalelite.com/keywords/poetry.html or whatever other keywords I use. I'd want it to be automated and dynamically updated. That is to say, if I add a new keyword to an entry, it would auto generate the keyword page and start collecting new entries for that keyword. I like this idea.

It would be useful for everyone (including me) if I had a way to show all linux-related entries on the linux.html keyword aggregation page. Of course I'd still have the main page that just shows the very latest entries, but if I do it right, it would only show the most recent, say, 10 or so entries, rather than showing the current month. For those who don't care one way or the other, look at it this way: if I had this system in place already, you would never have had to read this entry (because it would have been keyworded "blog" or something like that. You'd just show up one day and the blog would have links to keyworded content.

It would be fun to begin a work of serial fiction here. A blog is a natual fit for such a thing. Of course, it assumes that I'd be willing to regularly move the story forward. Perhaps I shall. Stay tuned for more on that.

My logo

Posted on 2005-12-15 at 08:02

So I decided, against my better judgement, to look into replacing my logo in the upper left corner with a transparent gif instead of a transparent png file. As you probably know (due to my incessant bitching), Internet Explorer does not render transparent png files properly. In the uppoer left, this means that visitors using IE only see a big white square instead of the logo. In the uppoer right, IE visitors can see the icons, but they are rendered ugly because the transparency is not shown, but for the other logo, the IE rendering it not so usable-but-ugly.

To that end, I figured I'd at least see what changing the png to a gif would look like. I converted the file. It looked like an 80's video game title---all jagged and lame. I was not dissuaded. I decided that maybe this was the result of the conversion process. I redid the logo from scratch and saved the original work to gif. Still more jagged and lame than the png version. Now I'm just mad. Gif is just an inferior format and IE won't support the better and newer standard. It may be newer, but it's still been around for about 7 or so years as I recall, so their lack of support (given the notably good support in EVERY OTHER BROWSER) is more than a bit irritating.

I may consider using a backgrounded png file (with the background being the color of my top bar. That way it will render the same in all browsers, but then any time I want to change the color scheme, I have to create new graphics. That is SOOOOOOO lame. Yes. I'm mad.

I'm sitting here at work waiting on a client to assist me with beginning the next phase of the project and I'm bored. To that end, I've decided to write my blog entries at work and when I get home, I'll add them to the site (since I can't post from this client). Note that this means that while I'm at this client you'll see a bunch of entries posted at once each evening that were likely written throughout the day.

The good news: I have now moved all processes and services to the new server. The bad news: It's becuase I totally hosed the old server last nght while trying to copy some settings over. I did a "rm *" on the /etc directory. That meant a night of frantic work to get it all up and running on the new system, since after that, the old one stopped working completely.

All my latest scripty goodness

Posted on 2005-12-09 at 08:02

Some of you have asked which blog application I use. Well, I don't use one. I just write my blog in xml and then I render that xml in html for the benefit of my reading public. Recently, I made a bunch of changes (see previous entries) to the design and structure of the site. Teh design changes are obvious, since you can see them on your screen, but the structural changes are really far more interesting to me (and to you if you are a geek).

Whereas I used to let the client browser transform and render the xml (using xsl and css), I know pregenerate the rendered html. Also, I used to have a redirect page as my index.html, which redirected visitors to whichever was the most recent blog page. Now I keep the most recent blog page in sync with the index page. This is because google dislikes redirects and it hurts my Google PankRank score. Now I can have a stable front page (like I used to a while back) that can enjoy a decent PageRank. For the curious, the script follows:

echo "Moving to the correct directory"
cd /mnt/tomde/

echo "Generating html from xml"
for xmlFile in *.xml; do
    xmlto --skip-validation -x main.xsl html $xmlFile;
done

echo "Cleaning up the generated html"

echo "Renaming the .proc files to .html files"

Form Criticism and My Blog

Posted on 2005-08-12 at 08:01

Writing is a multi-layered process. A good writer doesn't turn in his first draft; instead he mercilessly edits it until it hardly resembles the original. That's why this blog is, for me, an interesting experiment.

These entries don't go through the normal vetting process. I don't pour over them, making endless corrections. I don't do these things, because that is not what my blog is.

Once the entry is out there, I am quite loath to make changes, and tend to only make changes that don't alter the character of the original post. I don't know if that's how blogs ought to be written and read, but I know that's how you ought to read mine, because that's how I wrote it.

Well, I've started moving converted content to the site. You will now note (or, for the apathetic, ignore) that older content is all in xml files and within a day or two I expect all content to be in xml format. Specifically, the xml I chose was Atom feed format. It's like RSS, but better. When I'm all done, you should be able to subscribe to the site as a live feed and just get headlines in your feed reader. That's cool stuff if it works. Either way, xml is cleaner and easier to use moving forward, so I did it.

I considered doing it all dynamically, but then thought that it would be an interesting challenge to impoement it witout resorting to dynamic content. Instead, the base page will be written in XML (specifically the Atom namespace brand of XML) and I will use XSL and CSS to transform it back into the html you are used to seeing. The results should be kinda cool. I've got it almost complete and will unveil it soon. Of course, if I did it right, the grand unveiling will be a bit lame, since it should all look identical to how it does now...but with the ability to subscribe to the blog feed.

They cannot read my hard drive through my power line. The Ark of the Covenant is not a giant battery laser that the Jews built with secret Egyptian technology long since lost to the ages.

Link directly to your favorite blog entry!

Posted on 2004-10-15 at 08:02

By popular demand (i.e., I was bored and added it though no one asked or cares), I've added the ability to link directly to a blog entry. If you want to reference a specific day in the month, just add "#<day>" at the end of the URL, where <day> is the day of the month you want. So, for instance, if you want to link to my blog entry of August 25th, 2004 (because my views on human nature have changed you profoundly and you now worship me as a Gawd!) you'd link to: http://tom.digitalelite.com/0804_blog.htm#25.

So Dave tells me that the webmaster at his job, Frank, reads my blog on occasion. Cool. :-)

I've changed the colors on my site. I also added some small graphics on the upper right menu. If you don't like it, feel free to drop me a note.

Busy :-(

I've been so busy lately that I haven't had a chance to blog much. That needs to change.

I've been moving to the new home since June 21st, so I haven't had a chance to blog. Below I will try to hit the highlights.

OK, so I'm lame

Posted on 2004-04-29 at 08:01

I've been out of town and busier than I'd like for the last couple of weeks which is why there is such a large gap in the blog. I'll try to cover the last couple weeks events below.

My blog

Posted on 2004-04-08 at 08:01

I like the hands-on, simple text-edness of my blog (just open the page and edit it by hand to add an entry), but I really wish I had an RSS feed for it. That'd be cool. Not that it really matters, since noone reads this thing. :-)

Quiet time

Posted on 2004-04-07 at 08:02

I haven't been posting much lately due to the fact that I'm selling my house, buying a new new, adopting a kid, and still have a spanking new home business to run. Too much stuff, not enough time.

Note how nice I was. There were no stupid April 1st postings.

Bittorrent + RSS

Posted on 2004-03-16 at 08:01

I read an interesting article on "Broadcaching". This is an idea that, I believe, foreshadows the way things will be. As things stand, RSS is a simple Pull technology but that is simply not scalable enough in the long term for real data broadcasting. Neither is it's counterpart, Push technology. We need to explore better and more complex models to enable the killer networking apps of the future.

This Site

Denise is out all night at her parents becuase her grandparents are in town and I was supposed to be playing D&D all night anyway. Now I'm home alone, bored, and I've changed the theme and content of this site drastically. I should go to bed, but I probably won't for a bit longer.
