Successful cookouts and amicable hostage exchanges
Posted on 2007-07-28 at 20:52
A bunch of my friends came over for a cookout today. Shep was in town and showed up. Brent came with his family. Bryan (He Who Shall Die By My Hand) came over. Will showed...well actually Rebecca showed in his place. Much fun was had. There was chicken, derisive joking, beef, fire, corn, and vitriol. All was good in the land of Caudron.
As a side-note, I exchanged one item for one item with Bryan. He received his Mystic China book back in exchange for a Conan: Tower of the Elephant graphic novel. The exchange took place in a semi-lit hallway with nervous glances and distrustful scowls.
You, too, should read the new Conan: Tower of the Elephant:

Buffy Season 8

So, BtVS has been off the air for a couple of years, but Joss Whedon (series mastermind) has brought it back for an "8th season" via the medium of comic books. I have issue #1. It's a great book---solid art, and wonderful writing---but it is a very different medium. The difference in medium is evident in the story and the "feel" of the work itself as distinct from the tv series it follows.
So it you are a fan, go yourself a favor is get a copy (if you can find one!). You will be pleased, but don't expect the same audience experience you had watching the show. It goes without saying that it may be as good, but it's quite changed.
Hero or villian: You decide!

I took one of those online quizes (cuz they are fun and I have no life). This one to determine for me which comic book hero I am.
My results:
You are Green Lantern
| Hot-headed. You have strong will power and a good imagination.
|
I also took one to determine which comic book villian I might most identify with.
My results:
You are Lex Luthor
| A brilliant businessman on a quest for world domination and the self-proclaimed greatest criminal mind of our time!

Buffy Season 8

Joss Whedon, head writer and creative force behind the Buffy franchise, has annouced a deal with Dark Horse Comics to write a new comic series that takes place after the fade-to-black of the end of Season 7 of the Buffy series.
While not as good as a new tv show picking up where the old left off, this is still good news for those of us still entranced by the series. I believe I'll be subscribing asap.
In honor of the event, I've taken the Buffy Personality Test (to see which character I am most like). I did this because I have no life and dogged fanboyism is the way of my people. If you wish my tribe to accept you as one of us, you must go there now to take the test as I did. My results follow:
Glorificus
54% amorality, 72% passion, 90% spirituality, 45% selflessness
You probably have a complicated, multi-faceted personality. Kind of like Glory-Ben-Glorificus.
Passionate and driven with a spiritual side that comes out at times, a healthy taste for the finer things in life and a willingness to do what's necessary to achieve your ends. You're assertive and have no problems standing up for yourself. And, push come to shove, you're the closest anyone's ever come to straight-up beating the Slayer and her gang.
The upside of that result? Well, Glorificus was a god. Powerful. Capricious. The downside? Gorificus was raw evil. The sort of evil that steals wheelchairs and slaps the homeless. Glorificus is a survivor, but not in a good way.
I could swear I've taken that test in the past and gotten Xander as a result (which is much nicer, if a bit less interesting!).

Not work safe (due to foul language) but damn funny anyway.
Captain America versus the Patriot Act and President Bush
Posted on 2006-05-04 at 08:42
Captain America says that our President is an asshole. From the article:
Captain America is about to battle his most fearsome foe yet: The government of the United States.
Today, Marvel Comics is releasing the first in its miniseries Civil War, which can only be described as a gutsy comic-book series focusing on the whole debate over homeland security and tighter government controls in the name of public safety.
The seven-issue series once again puts superheroes right back in the thick of real-world news, just as DC Comics has Batman battling al-Qaeda in a soon-to-appear comic and Marvel's X-Men continue to explore themes of public intolerance and discrimination.
It also recalls the plotline during the Watergate years when Captain America's alterego, disillusioned by White House politics, stopped donning the patriotic costume.
But with Civil War, hero is pitted against hero in the choice of whether or not to side with the government, as issues ranging from a Guantanamo-like prison camp for superheroes, embedded reporters and the power of media all play in the mix.
A bit of a long quote, but the story is just too interesting to me.
Robert E. Howard has enviably lyrical prose
Posted on 2006-04-23 at 21:40
In this world men struggle and suffer vainly, finding pleasure only in the bright madness of battle ... Let me live deep where I live; let me know the rich juices of red meat and stinging wine on my palate, the hot embrace of white arms, the mad exultation of battle when the blue blades flame and crimson, and I am content. Let teachers and priests and philosophers brood over questions of reality and illusion. I know this: if life is illusion, then I am no less an illusion, and being thus, the illusion is real to me. I live, I burn with life, I love, I slay and am content.

What would Jesus do if he returned to Earth and discovered he was wildly out of touch with modern trends? Don a Spandex costume and fight sin on the streets of New York City, of course! But as always, he faces several obstacles: a disapproving Father; the Antichrist, in the guise of the New York City Parks Commissioner; and the temptations of a beautiful seamstress.
Step One: Get a Cool Costume

My three step list intitled "How to be a bad bitch" just got one item shorter! I know what my super hero costume is gonna be made of now.
All that's left are steps two ("Master all known martial arts") and three ("Bring it!!!").
Green Lantern is cool

I've been finishing up the organization of my comics (want to get done before I leave) and I came across some old Green Lanterns that I hadn't read in a while. That was a good series.
Unlike Superman, who is often kind of a jerk.
And Wonder Woman, who's just a little too kinky for me. (Why is she winking at me?!?)
About me

Someone asked me why I bothered getting a degree in Religion and Literature if I'm gonna spend all my time making jokes about body functions and reading comic books. If a lifetime of reading the Amazing Spider Man has taught me anything, it's that high and low culture are false distinctions. Friedrich Nietzsche? Asshat.
