My mini-review of the 4th edition of DnD as we currently know it

Posted on 2007-08-24 at 23:26

Some of the details of the upcoming 4th edition have been leaked. Those details give us a jumbled picture from which to work, but below is my attempt to comment on the mass of random comments and facts leaked so far.

Races

Mentioned some race disappearing from core (bets go for the Gnome), possibly to be included in an early supplement.

I say fine. The gnome was turning into a joke. Better to drop the gnome than do it poorly as every edition has since after the 1st. If they want some ideas about how to make the Gnome cool again, though, I'm their man. He can and should fill a niche that no other race currently fills (and it ain't the comic relief!).

Tiefling included, and they look much more demonic than now (almost half-demon).

I'm not down with this, in that it is an attempt to bring evil character's to the fore. Maybe I'm an old fuddy-duddy, but evil isn't cool. Cool is the image of the lone Paladin fighting off the hordes of demonkind. Playing D&D is about playing a hero in some manner or form.

Changeling from Eberron may be included.

Meh, I have no opinion on this, except that it seems lame. I'll wait and see, though.

"Dwarven resilience, elven evasion, a half-elf’s inspiring presence" mentioned as racial traits.

I like the sound of these racial traits, but not sure what it all means.

Classes can be improved by racial feats, in a similar way to how current racial substitution levels work.

I like this idea. We used Racial feats in our home campaign and I think they are a good idea overall.

All classes have at will, per encounter and per day abilities.

This is a GREAT thing. An adventurer's day shouldn't end after the first encounter of the morning. Having abilities that work with each encounter is a good solution to that problem. This (and the related new rules) are what most make me want to play the 4th ed rules.

Classes

Levels go up to 30, instead of 20;
Level division:
  • 1-10 Heroic - foes are orcs and ogres, some giants, small dragons. Adventures tend to be local.
  • 11-20 Paragon - on par with the current low to mid teens right now. Bigger threats are faced that might threaten a kingdom.
  • 21-30 Epic- World or Planar threats.

I don't have an opinion about this. The level number matters less than the gameplay at a given level. If 30 is the new 20, that's fine by me either way.

The goal is to have the levels play in a similar manner - they don't want a 25th character overwhelmed with 80 abilities. The main differences should be in the story, not how they play.

I want to see what this means in practice before I comment more.

From GamerZer0's interview with James Wyatt: There are four "roles".
  • Defender: fighter & paladin classes
  • Leader: cleric & warlord classes
  • Controller: wizard class
  • Striker: rogue & ranger classes
Although two PCs may serve the same role, they may do it in different ways. (Like fighters with different styles.) The roles are geared towards combat; a PC's non-combat aspects can differentiate him further. He also said that they are still considering the possibility of there being a class or two that doesn't quite fit the four "roles".

Unless roles have abilities or something I don't see that this is anything more than trying to help newer players create balanced parties. Not in any way useful to experienced gamers. If this is some sort of model to be followed with a penalty for non-compliance, then I have a problem with it. Experienced gamers like to experiment with themed parties, and this would get in the way of that. That'd be uncool. Not sure if WotC would do something that boneheaded, though.

Fighter, Cleric, Rogue and Wizard definitely stay (multiple mentions and examples). Also mentioned Barbarian, Paladin and Ranger. Mentioned that wizard and sorcerer won't merge. Sorcerer will be different from wizards in more ways than just resource management.

Good to see that the basics stay, I suppose. That leaves us wondering about monks, bards, and druids, among others. I wouldn't miss bards (as none has been cool since the 1st ed). I'd understand if they dropped monks, though I'd miss them. Druids would be an odd choice. They are a class firmly rooted in the mythos that D&D tries to express.

Mentioned that paladins can be of other alignments other than lawful good.

More attempts to push players away from the hero model. I'm sure they want to accommodate anti-paladins (Chaotic Evil paladins) and the such. That would be a serious blow to the game in my opinion.

Mentioned a warlord class

I'm interested in hearing more.

Druid mentioned in D&D's seminar's summary

So the druid stays? I hope so.

Backstab mentioned.

It better be mentioned or they might be the recipients of an unexpected one by the legion of loyal thief/rogue players!

Fighter's "powers" depend highly on the weapon they chose as primary - spears have different "powers" available than axes; swords and greatswords are very flexible in terms of said "powers"

This has the potential to be cool, but it also has to potential to suck raw ass. I don't want something that feels too computer-game. Above all, any combat my fighter engages in should feel like the sort of swordplay I read about in Conan, Tolkien, or other classic fantasy literature. Weapon powers that bring me closer to that feel will be embraced, but weapon powers that feel more like Mortal Combat or Guild Wars will make me far less likely to buy into the 4th edition.

Wisdom helps with power selection.

So a fighter might benefit from a higher wisdom? That could be interesting. It would throw off the power gamers, which isn't entirely a bad thing.

Mentioned a "rain of blows" power or maneuver for swords; mentioned making a choice between taking the abilities "Supreme Cleave" or "Massive Strike".

Those powers sound very Guild Wars. I'm hoping I'm wrong.

More on martial abilities: "A skilled halberdier can hack a foe with his weapon’s blade and spin around to smash a second foe with the haft. A fighter with a longsword disarms her foe with a flick of her wrist, while a battle hungry axeman cleaves through shields, armor, and bone." "Rogues have a similar relationship with skills. A nimble rogue dives through the air to tumble past an ogre, while a charismatic one tricks an enemy into looking away just before she delivers a killing blow with her dagger. Just as fighters do more with weapons than any other character, rogues push skills beyond the limits that constrain other PCs."

I like what I'm hearing here. My concern is that it could be hard to nail down the limits and effects of those sorts of things. Just what can a rogue do with the Bluff skill that another player can't? Ambiguity is fine enough, but it does open the door for power gamers again.

Cleric mentioned creating a "surge of healing power" alongside a critical hit. This hints (yet unconfirmed) to mechanics similar to some Crusader maneuvers, from Tome of Battle.

No real comment on this power, but I want to reiterate that the "per encounter" and such rules for powers are most welcome.

Some current base classes disappear; classes yet to be mentioned and therefore good candidates are Monk and Bard. Classes that don't appear in the PHB will appear in future products. Psionics not to be included in core, though they'll have support.

Glad to see Psionics dropped from the core PHB. I've never really been a fan of them. Psionics are a bit too sci-fi for my fantasy tastes.

Prestige classes stay.

I could have sworn they said they were dropping them. Frankly, I was happy to see them go. Now I'm not certain of their fate, though I'd vote em off the island if it were up to me.

Feats and skills

Move silently and hide rolled into one ("Stealth?")

Good. Nothing was more annoying than rolling 15 times to sneak down a 25 foot hallway while searching for traps.

Some of the more obscure or less used skills disappear (mentioned tailor and rope use)

Not sure I'd drop rope use, but I can understand some of the less used skills going away. I thought Tailor was a profession skill though? Are they dropping Profession? If not, what's to stop me from taking tailor anyway? I make up Knowledge skills for characters as needed. I dunno. I need to see what this all means.

Mentioned that Sage should be "considered a preview [of the skill system]"

Haven't checked that out. I guess I'll have to.

Feats won't form long chains.

That's probably for the best. Planning for the higher end feats was often cumbersome and irritating. Much better to put other limits of powerful feats, like level minimums and the such.

There will be rules akin to the retraining rules in PHBII - they don't like the idea of people planning their careers from level 1 to 30.

This is probably a good thing, but I want to see how they implement it before I commit to a thumbs up.

Combat and encounters

Rules for non-combat encounters. The example given was social interaction. Unlike 3E, where negotiation amounts to a single Diplomacy check, it's treated almost like a combat in 4E. I make a skill check, but I also tell the DM what/how I'm doing. The opponent responds with behavior (and a check) of his own. I counter with a new check, and new words. And so forth.

That.
*rolls d20*
Sounds.
*rolls d20*
Lame.

Saves mentioned. AC mentioned, apparently with the same function as it has today.

Good. These are sacred cows and should be maintained unless we are given a damn good alternative.

Free, immediate, move and standard actions mentioned. (it stands to reason Swift actions will be present too).

I don't see how this simplifies the current move system, but I accept that I might need to play with it to see the benefot in action (pardon the pun).

Critical hits mentioned. Confirmation rolls for critical hits possibly go away.

It's just plain fun to think that there's a chance that any given attack might be the lucky one that gets the players all standing up and shouting at the dice. Critical hits are a table rouster.

Attacks of opportunity gone or greatly changed/simplified: a fighter charges a dragon and no AoO is mentioned.

I'm not moved by this change. AoO were an interesting add-on to the game, but I never thought of them as something that added greatly to the experience one way or the other. If there, I'll use them and if not, I won't.

Grapple greatly simplified.

Please, oh please, do not make grappling stupid. I agree that the rules made me run to the PHB every time due to being hard to memorize, but if you simplify them too greatly, grappling will suck open ass and never get used. I want grapples in the game. I want players to want to use them when appropriate. I don't want them to go away.

Combat still uses a square grid

Good, because my battle mat costs more than your core books. I'd probably changed games before I changed mats. ;-)

Spells and magic

Vancian system survives, but it's ony a "fraction" of the magic (or magic options) available to characters: "a wizard who casts all his memorized per day spells should be at about 80% of power."

I like this for the same reason that I like "per encounter" powers. Anything that keeps the heros heroic is fine by me. Don't make mage's dominate, but make them useful all day. Nothing is more lame than the party deciding to rest for the night at 10:30 in the morning because the mage has already had to use all his spells. That is the suck.

"Wizards will be able to cast 25th-level spells."

As with character levels, a number doesn't mean anything to me. If 25 or the new 9, I don't care as long as a mage isn't casting the 25th level "Sunder Universe" spell.

Fireballs don't deal 1d6/level damage any more. Also, game breaking spells (spells that fundamentally change the gaming scenario, like etherealness, scrying, and save or die effects) "have been addressed as well".

Addressed is a good start. Healing magic needs to neutered in my opinion. Nothing says "computer game" like a Heal Up after every combat. It's just lame.

Mentioned a "ray of freezing cold".

With 25 levels, and a serious revamping of the magic system, I am really interested in seeing the new spell lists. It'll be interesting if they move more toward magic effects than spells---which it sounds like they might do.

Magic items

Magic item creation doesn't use XP or require a feat.

Willbecca will be happy. He's bitched from the beginning about the XP cost of item creation.

Monsters

The monsters will have their own roles and their own abilities- the orc will have orc abilities, not fighter or barbarian abilities. "The ettin, for instance, has the whole two-heads thing, so it can go twice in one round, and take unrelated actions."

I think this could be a good thing, if they move toward all monsters being classed to gain the fighter abilities, for instance. We'll see how they handle it.

Monsters no longer drain XP (implied no draining of levels?)

Awesome. Worst call I ever had to make as a DM was telling a guy at a tournament that his super-cool favorite dwarf just lost two levels permanently and without a saving throw. I was embarrassed to be the guy enforcing that crap-ass rule.

Vulnerability to energy likely to work differently in 4e, with additional effects (like slowing in the case of cold) instead of (or in addition to?) extra damage.

Cool. Makes more sense than losing levels in any case!

Ancient (red?) dragons apparently now can do a lot of things:
  • An inferno aura, usable as a free action.
  • A tail slap attack with an added pushback effect, usable as a free action.
  • Two claw attacks, usable as a standard action.
  • A fireball spit that sticks to the target dealing extra damage, usable as a standard action.
  • A breath weapon, but we don't get to see what kind of action it normally takes - a free one like the inferno aura, as different uses of the same ability?
  • A special action granting an extra standard action.
  • They may take an immediate action to use their breath weapon when reduced blow half damage.
  • They may take an immediate action to use their tail slap when about to be flanked.

Sounds powerful as a bitch. Good. A big ol' dragon should be powerful.

Said dragon would have around 1000 hit points.

OK, it is powerful as bitch. Cool!

Qin: The Warring States

Posted on 2007-08-07 at 08:37

Not sure if I've ever mentioned it before, but there's a game called "Qin: The Warring States". If you are a gamer you owe it to yourself to find a copy. It's rare that a game comes along with a truly interesting new take on action resolution. Qin is one of them. From an RPG.net review of the game:

Qin: the Warring States is a roleplaying game set in ancient China during a period known as the Warring States. Those of you who have interest in Chinese movies may have seen The Emperor and the Assassin or, more likely, Hero. Both of these movies are set in this period, around 200 BC, when the ruler of Qin was on the ascent with the aim of reuniting the Seven States under one banner, his own. The idea behind the Qin RPG is to play heroic characters during this troubled era who, plunged in the political turmoil, may come to influence the destiny of the Kingdoms.

I'm headed out of town to Danville to visit family after work today. I'll be back sometime Monday afternoon. I'll be leaving again on Wednesday for GenCon and not coming back until late Sunday evening. So from this afternoon until the 14th, I'll be out of town, excepting Tuesday, the 8th, when I will be in town briefly between trips.

While out of town, I'll be blogging offline, which means that after I get back, you may see a bunch of backdated posts added to the blog all at once.

Geekish pasttimes

Posted on 2006-02-27 at 10:51

The new campaign got underway in earnest this past Saturday. We'd had a previous session, but this one was more lengthy, productive, and fun.

As of the last session, a mage with whom Endrathor (my character) had been at odds since his own apprenticeship stole Endrathor's only magic item (a wand of silence) as we were on the way to an old keep where a rumor persisted that the previous inhabitant has become one of the undead. In this session, we finished the long trek to the town of Ardwick, outside of which lies the old keep, and we began inquiring about our destination with the local townsfolk. While doing so, the village was raided and a religious artifact stolen. We set out to overtake the fleeing orcs who had stolen it. After tracking them for a few hours (they had a commanding lead), we found their camp and were about to enter to retrieve the relic. It is my belief that the townsfolk are hiding something about the old keep and that it ties into this stolen holy artifact (as that is how good plots work) but I'm not certain of it all ties together yet. We shall see.

Also of note in this last session is that I cast the spell "Color Spray" onto a creature that was grappled with our party's fighter. Of course, the fighter was also affected and quite a bit more-so than the creature we were fighting. Though one of the most boneheaded things I'd done in a very long time, it made the encounter a great deal more suspenseful and fun for all, so I only partly regret it. My illusionist received a lengthy and stern lecture from the party after said event. Perhaps Endrathor will come to be known for his impatience.

OMG TPK WTF!?!

Posted on 2006-02-06 at 07:01

We have experienced another TPK (Total Party Kill) at the same DM's hand. This makes two in as many months. To keep this in perspective, in my entire life of playing DnD, I've experienced two other TPK's in total. That means, two TPK's over the span of 20+ years, then suddenly two in the span of two months.

The Origin of Duulan

Posted on 2006-01-04 at 10:48

Spit into this world near the base of the Ageless Mountains, I have never felt a part of the greater scheme---in fact, I never even understood this greater scheme of which others spoke. How could they be so easily duped! While other young boys spent their early mornings in the temple listening to crippled priests spew old lies about Garl Glittergold and his travails against the Big Folk, I sat alone, staring out over the valley that spread beneath my window, and wondered. It was the unknown that called to me! It was the unknown that made itself in my image each morning as I stared over that wide expanse. I read voraciously from my mother's tattered texts of illusions. I longed for a taste of the valley as it really was, not as it seemed from my sterile cloister. Garl be damned! I would leave this place and seek true knowledge. Alas, it was not until my forty-third year that I had the funds with which to leave. But leave I did! And from there I sought the greatest illusionist in the land. My mother had mentioned his name casually once, but I did not forget. Haurdwen the Neverseen she called him---and her voice was pregnant with awe as the name lifted from her tongue. Yes, it was Haurdwen who would teach me.

Searching for nearly ten years, I found Haurdwen in the city of Moy, near the southernmost coast of the Mercara Bay. There he sat, alone and unconcerned. He was a gnome to be admired. Haurdwen the Neverseen. Haurdwen the Black. Haurdwen Shadowbringer, Many were the names of Haurdwen from the few people who'd heard of him and lived. To himself, he was merely Haurdwen. Haurdwen saw my potential and chose me as his only student in nearly forty years. The pride filled my fluttering chest and gripped my legs with iron as I heard him accept me as pupil. My tales would be grand. I would honor Haurdwen. Never would he look back on me and think this a mistake.

And he never did. My history with my mother's old texts proved useful to my studies under Haurdwen. I quickly moved past the basic Glamers expected of apprentices. Haurdwen chose well. It was my eleventh year of tutelage under the great master when he introduced me to the next level of my studies:

"Truly, Duulan, you have shown great promise and done me proud. It is time now to put aside your childhood and become one with the magic. For long have you studied the ancient texts, as I did in youth as well. They, Duulan, are not enough. I will now teach you the arts of subterfuge from which our illusions extend. You will learn to be and to not be, to exist without existing, to have and to not have. There are those who will name you 'thief' and 'scoundrel' and 'skulker', but they are craven and fear what you represent. You, Duulan, will be the unknown. You will walk carefully through this world while those around you stomp carelessly. You will whisper truths while those around you shout lies. You will be everpresent and neverseen. Duulan, you wished to know the unknown. I will make you the unknown. In childhood you spoke like a child, you thought like a child, you knew only what a child knows. For then you knew only in part, but now you shall know fully even as you meld with the unknown. This is my last gift to my greatest student. Accept it and be content that you have pleased me."

My lessons took a turn toward the stealthful arts. I learned the workings of locks, so that no secrets can be kept from me. I learned to move without the signs of sight or sound, so that I may come and go as I please in secrecy. I learned the arts of subterfuge and innuendo, so that I might speak without telling all and listen to parts while hearing the whole. Many were the lessons Haurdwen taught me, and many more were the questions I had for him. I learned well.

Then came the time---nine fruitful years later---when Haurdwen was to let me go into the world. Saddened but prepared, I left Haurdwen's lair---the place I'd called home for the past twenty years. Coming to Deas Caer, I called upon a party of adventurers in search of a thief. I am no mere thief, but they could not be expected to know that. Perhaps they weren't meant to know that....

I came across old coolness

Posted on 2005-12-16 at 08:02

I was going through my old gaming folders and came across these notes from my last campaign. It was a good campaign. It's a shame the main plot never finished coming to fruition.

For Salot the Mad (Cleric of Zagyg)

Called to a meeting of the prominent clergy of Zagyg, Salot is first congratulated on the consecration of his temple in the shanty town near Barge End. They inform him that two acolytes will be dispatched to care for the premises under his guidance (and cost, of course) so that he may continue his important works for the faith.

After those and other formalities, the church leaders faces grow dim. They tell of a vision that Nethrond the Elder has had. Nethrond is one of the faith's great seers and his visions, called the Clarities of Nethrond by the church leaders, are often portents of significance.

Called to the floor of the great meeting hall, Nethrond speaks of seeing a ghostly Helix over the skies of Greyhawk. He tells of a river of tears running through the streets and the pall of some great shadow casting doom over the lands of the faithful.

Finally, after examining the books and letters you found in the lair of the cult, you are able to discern that the Silver Dragon was, indeed, to be used for the foul purpose of awakening The Sleeper. None of the texts, however, delve into exactly what The Sleeper is. The most you can find is a small snippet in a letter of correspondence which reads thus:

"The historical texts cover the truth, my Dread Lord, but the magics I employed, the sacrifices I made, they do not. It was The Sleeper. In those days The Sleeper did awaken, and the world knew pain and misery and destruction. So, yes, to answer your question, he will surely do all that you'd hoped. Let loose the beast." The letter goes on to talk about a cambion named Yach-Tek and the Triangular Tome of Kugatsmor, though in context it appears unrelated to the business about The Sleeper. The text is signed simply "Your humble fiend-servant"

For Tetsuo Shima (Master Samurai)
You receive a message from your homeland by courier:

To the Great Samurai Tetsuo,

From his Father's first Lord, his Uncle, and Leader of House Shima,

Greetings to you, Tetsuo. I trust your unpleasant business among the savages is coming to a close soon. Truly you have suffered to live in the squalor of the Gaijen. May your children's children be blessed and known for your sacrifice. The honorable name of Tetsuo Shima has reached even as far as the plum covered shores of Rokugan. You do us proud.

Still, Tetsuo, a dark rumour clouds your honor. Some less honorable scabs in the other houses, like those of House Myomoto, have taken to suggesting that the Great Tetsuo of House Shima is lordless, a mere Ronin, holding allegiance only to the purse and the battle. I know better of my Tetsuo and I look forward to seeing how you will dispel the vile lies of the enemies of our honor.

Yet, a matter of still graver importance has caused me to write you this day, Tetsuo. Our Emporer's ambassador to Nyrond has told us of a dishonorable man, a Baron Bastrayne of Woodwych, who has stolen much from the tax coffers of his province in Nyrond and left the lands in a shambles. While it is not the business of the Rokugani what one savage does to his brethren, it serves the Emporer's whim that we offer our help in bringing the dog of Woodwych back to the King of Nyrond in our Emporer's name. Much honor would be bestowed upon the house of the man that did such a thing and you, Tetsuo, are the closest to the lands. I ask you to demonstrate your greatness, ask your lord for a leave of absence, showing him this letter, of course, and upon your just lord's approval, meet with Lord Astentate, ambassador of Nyrond in the City of Greyhawk for more details. He is expecting you. Do not dissappoint your family.

May your sword be covered in the blood of the dishonorable and your blood cover the sword of the honorable.

Shogun Morishihai Shima

For Dirk Delwood (Knight of the Great Kingdom)
While on one of your many quests for information about the powers of Aerdy and possible ways to attain it, you come across the following information from a book intitled "Mysteries of Ahlissa":

The Crypt of Scales is but folklore, some say. But others believe it exists. No one is sure where it lies, but veiled references to its existence are present in some of the ancient writings of those Aerdi who first came to Ahlissa. Only Cyndor of Aerdi (a long dead sage) is said to have known the entirity.of the writings of these Oeridian settlers, but over the years scraps of their lore have surfaced. It is said that the Crypt is occupied by the bones and treasures of many dragons, and that it is gaurded by both living and undead wyrms. Carrod the diviner is said to own the only known object to have come from the Crypt, and he has determined that it is not only a place where dragons died, but also a portal to the Mausoleum of Chronepsis. Unnamed sources indicate that Carrod may not be the only one to have such a treasure; the exiled Jaran Krimeeah allegedly also possesses such as object. There is no living person who admits to having found the Crypt's entrance, and few books tell of it. The text is clear, however, that if one could find it, and return alive, the wealth and knowledge would be unimaginable. Surely, someone foolishly looking to usurp the Malachite Throne from Ivid of Rauxes might find such a place...interesting. Surely though, more research would have to be done before such a tidbit bore fruit.

For Necrolis (A Wizard of the Necromantic Arts)
A contact of yours within the Guild of Undertakers and Tailors (don't ask!) sent word that he had information that you might want. Meeting him to get the details, he tells you that he was recently called to the scene of an abduction by the authorities. The man claimed to have been abducted was a priest of Wastri called Quell Rithsbone. He goes on to say that when he arrived and discovered that it was an abduction and not a death, he questioned the constable as to why the guild was brought into this affair. This is when the constable showed your friend the back room, where several corpses, clearly the remains of undead lie scattered on the floor. After a few questions about the specifics, you begin to suspect the Sons of Kyuss. From your studies, your recall that some powerful beings (Demon Princes like Yeenoghu and the lords of darkness like Iuz) occasionally send the Sons of Kyuss to visit those who have fallen into disfavor or who have failed or reneged on an oath. No sign of Quell was found, but the guild was instructed to destroy the bodies of the undead and to keep the entire event a secret, lest panic ensue.

My next character

Posted on 2005-12-16 at 08:01

I think I've decided. Tomorrow, I'll be rolling up a new Cleric (just like the short-lived previous character) but this time it'll be a gnomish cleric of the god of the earth. His clerical domains will be fire and earth...oh, and he's gonna be insane. That'll be fun to play. A cleric who's always muttering to himself becuase he believes that he is in constant conversation with his deity. He'll be manic and delusional, with perhaps just a hint (don't wanna overdo it) of paranoia. This is gonna be fun. :)

Well, Will wants to be a Rogue and Roy wants to be a Sorcerer. Not sure what Dave wants, but I may be going for either a Paladin, Cleric, or Fighter. Not sure which.

Total Party Kill. :(

This past Saturday, for the weekly game, we started a new campaign. This past Saturday, for the weekly game, we ended our new campaign.

Yeah. We were off to a good start. We had a balanced party (Ranger, Sorcerer, Cleric, Rogue). We had good stats. We were careful. But none of that stopped us from getting offed by some kobolds who were able to pelt us with crossbows for several rounds before we could reach them. We actually killed all the kobolds, but a dog---a dog for God's sake---killed the last man standing (my Cleric) just before I was about to kill him and thus save the party at the last minute. Oh well. I guess we'll be making new characters and starting a new campaign this coming week. Maybe I'll be a Gnome Illusionist or a Gnome Ranger. Will says he wants to be a Dwarven Rogue. Not sure what Dave wants. Roy may want to be a Sorcerer again. If so, then I won't play an Illusionist. We need to keep a balanced party and having two mages won't bode well for our survivability.

And for the record: I called it in the beginning of the fight. I said, "We can't win this." I take some socially perverse pleasure in both knowing and saying that I was right.

Bryan put our characters online. Rury is mine. This pleases me. I'll allow him to live another few months in reward for his obedience.

Since Will is gonna be the DM, I'll be playing Rury, a Dwarven Rogue, with a concentration in the dual arts of picking locks and disabling traps. Rury will be a fine addition to my stable of characters.

Will as DM

Though Will and I were both going to run the next campaign, Will has graciously volunteered to be the sole DM becuase we atrophied a few players. He is planning to run us through a dungeon campaign. I look forward to it.

The Next Campaign

Bryan's campaign is ending in a session or two and Will and I have agreed to co-DM the next one. That is good, because it keeps the workload from falling on just one person. We have some good ideas and I'm looking forword to seeing them brought to fruition.

DnD was pretty packed last week. We had, me, Will, Bryan, Conspiracy Dave, Roy, Eruption Dave, Berry, and Will's friend from Boston. Eruption Dave has said he plans to return next week to join the campaign as a Paladin. Cool. We could use a Paladin.

Dizzying Heights of Power

Posted on 2005-01-18 at 08:02

Our D&D party is getting up there in level and in power. It's been a while since I played a truly high level character, so this will be fun. Still, I prefer low level campaigns overall. Arturr is 14th level, and he is nigh invincible!

I've spent some time lately working on the D&D campaign. The results have been positively received by the group. I'm pleassed as well. The Sundered Coast religious structure is something I'm getting to be quite proud of. I expect to post some details here soon enough.

Pantheon and Cosmology in the Sundered Coast

Posted on 2004-09-20 at 08:02

I started working on the hosts of heaven and hell for the campaign today. Fun stuff. Trying to capture the aspect of Faith present in today's religions that is notably absent in DnD religions. I have a fair shot at it. A taste of the cosmology so far:

In the beginning was nothingness, called Yaldaboath by the Bahran people and known by various names in other mythologies. From nothingness sprang Saboath, neither begotten nor desired. Saboath was saw that he existed and determined it was Good. He set about to creating more, thus reducing the nothingness. Yaldaboath was spiteful and begrudged Saboath and all that existed, for it was an affront to her beauty, which is extinction.

From the "O' Bahran Alquandas" (The History of All People):

"...thus Yaldaboath mingled with her own nature and begot seven offspring. These are the names of them: Jealousy, Wrath, Tears, Curse, Suffering, Lamentation, and Bitter Weeping. Each gave child to one another and each, in turn, begat seven so that they amount to forty-nine demon-gods.

And in the presence of these evils, Saboath created seven good forces. These are the names of them: Peace, Gladness, Joy, Blessedness, Truth, Love, and Faith. And from these there are many good and innocent spirits."

Gnomes in the campaign

Posted on 2004-09-13 at 08:04

I need to write something more formal up for the D&D group, but I gotta get my thoughts together on the use of Gnomes in the campaign. I like the idea of a Gnomish race that is riddled with secret societies, hidden agendii, and occult interests. Valued as advisors, sages, and researchers, Gnomes would be an important resource to a ruler, but a dangerous one as well, since he would never really be certain the Gnome didn't have ulterior motives that ran contrary to his own good.

And the winner is...

Posted on 2004-08-24 at 08:02

Me, Will, Daren, and Bryan all made it to the semi-finals for the Dungeon Crawl Classics Tournament. Our teams winning streak ended there, but I got to advance with the winning team anyway (they had a dropout). That team and I continued on and took the Gold. I got a cool trophy, some loot, and some prestige. Neat. The tournament was run by Goodman Games. They do good work.

Arturr hits 9th

Posted on 2004-06-18 at 08:02

Last Saturday, Arturr and Eldrith both hit 9th level. If you don't know D&D then let me explain. Though it's been forgotten in the current edition, 9th level used to be called "name level" and it was when your character was finally coming into his own. You don't know Arturr? Well that just means you haven't been to our D&D group's web site in a while!
